Fieke van Berkom Detroit Rich Soul

Back

I observed Detroit in 2010, 2013 and 2014. The city of Detroit, Michigan, filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy on July 18, 2013. It is the largest municipal bankruptcy filing in U.S. history by debt, estimated at $18–20 billion. While the city was broken the U.S. government was’nt much of a help for the people. Detroit people are hands-on and so this was a catalyst to create a lot of grassroots organisations that furfill the needs of the people. I was impressed by the D.I.Y. mentality what really gets the job done. I documented several community gardens, mural projects, a recycle centre with art and music studio’s and a food bank runned by a church.
