Fieke van Berkom Kneel for a peace of mind
In the biggest prison in Mexico City there is a special program for inmates who arrive there with addiction problems. The inmates can choose to take part of the DETOX program. In this program they can not have contact with their families for three months but they can take part of several health programs. One of these programs is Kundalini Yoga. This yoga form is all about the balance between mental and physical health. Access to a good health system is considered as a human right and should not stop when people end up in prison. The Mexican government takes this very seriously, that’s why this alternative program started as an experiment but is running successfully for eleven years already. Lupe Guadaloupe, Kundalini Yoga teacher comes to the prison once a week to give classes, she travels 2 hours and won’t get paid. She is not interested in the past of the inmates but focuses on the present and the future. She approaches the inmates in a positive way to not judge them. The yoga lessons are giving the inmates more tolerance and more self confidence. The inmates who take the Kundalini yoga classes don’t get into fights any more and they stay more relaxed in any situation. One inmate told me he feels free when he practises yoga.
